One hundred and fifty years ago, Winifred Willett was born above a Pimlico, London, butcher's shop. Sent to a local College for Young Ladies she received cooking lessons and started to collect recipes. Along came World War I and food preparation had to accommodate extreme supply shortages. After the war, the situation returned to normal, but when WWII was declared Winnie was ready and out came her 'economical' recipes once again. Many of the following collection of recipes are Winnie's and will not be found in modern cookbooks, but they are tasty, inexpensive and well worth trying. In addition we have included favourites contributed by family and friends worldwide. Thanks folks!
